Class II - Saturday, July 11, 2009

If you have thought about being a paddler for a swimmer on long distance ocean swims, this FREE class will show you the best techniques for escorting open water swimmers safely and enjoyably. First we’ll cover the basics of paddling for a swimmer, including safety, navigation, feedings, and racing strategies. After that, we’ll paddle out for some “hands on experience” in the water.

We encourage swimmers and paddlers to attend this class together and to take turns paddling and swimming with a paddler. It’s the best way to understand the teamwork involved in a successful open water swim. Be prepared to be out in the elements for a few hours..... Bring/wear sunscreen, a hat to protect you from the sun’s rays, something to sit on, a towel, swimsuit(and/or wet suit), plenty of water to keep hydrated, and something light to munch on as the class will go through the lunch hour. If you’ve got one, bring your kayak, paddle board or long board for the in-water part of the class.

The class is taught by David Clark. Meet at La Jolla Shores on the grass behind the main lifeguard tower at 9:00 a.m. If you would like to attend this class, please RSVP to David at 858-453-0648. It’s a great opportunity and there are many events coming up which require paddlers, including our very own Tour of Buoys, which is a great opportunity for paddlers and swimmers alike.
